We live in a world where the average child spends more than 3 hours a day in front of an electronic screen, as reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics (JAMA). This makes it pivotal to instil a love for art and crafting in our children from a young age.Textiles have always played a very important role in the cultural, economic, and social life of Asia making sewing a very good skill to teach to your children. Sewing is not only a relaxing activity in which young and old can partake, but also one that can teach valuable, lifelong skills to the youngest members of the family.

Getting started

Teaching your children to sew does not have to be an overly-expensive affair. As long as you have the basics covered, you will be able to work on a number of easy projects with the children in the family. There are countless haberdasheries scattered across Asia that sell everything you need for your first sewing lesson. Make sure you remember to get needles, thread, pins, a pin cushion, measuring tape, thimble, and of course some fabric. A basic sewing machine is also a good investment as it will not only allow you to sew faster with greater precision but also to partake in a larger and more advanced range of sewing projects. If you have a sewing machine you can also make spend some of your free time making clothes for your family as well as beautiful décor for your new home.

Sewing is of great benefit to children

Apart from being enjoyable, sewing can also fine tune a child’s motor and math skills. The intricate processes often associated with sewing can boost a child’s coordination, grasping skills, and hand strength. Children who sew also learn the importance of accurate measuring and frequently use basic math and geometry when cutting patterns and crafting beautiful creations. Make sure that you assign age-appropriate tasks to your children. Whereas a teenager may be confident and competent enough to make a basic garment from scratch under your guidance, a 5-year old will be happy just to get the thread through the eye of the needle for starters.

It is a healthy, creative social outlet

Relocating to a new country can be somewhat overwhelming for the kids, even though they are generally quick to adapt to new surroundings. Instilling a love for sewing in your children can provide them with a healthy means of meeting new friends while participating in an activity they really enjoy. Most of the larger towns and cities across Asia offer sewing lesson to adults and children alike. If there is not such a service being offered where you stay, why not initiate it yourself? You don’t even have to be a pro to set up a mom and daughter sewing circle, for example, either. All you need is a big enough space to set up in, a few basic pieces of sewing equipment, and lots of creative ideas. The children will love sewing with their peers and will undoubtedly forge many solid friendships in the process.

Teaching your children to sew will undoubtedly be one of the most valuable skills you can teach them. Sewing will also provide you with the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with the most important people in your life, doing something that you all enjoy.
